Bilingualism

The Benefits of Bilingualism

Imagine what it is like to be able to read, write and speak in two entirely unrelated languages. That is exactly what it is like for MIS children when they graduate from Grade 6. To watch and listen to children switch effortlessly between Japanese and English, with perfect pronunciation, is a joy to behold.

The benefits of bilingualism are well documented, and there is none greater than the enhanced prospects of young people as Japan looks to the future. Our increasingly inter-connected world will place great value on bilingual graduates, whether in the fields of commerce, industry or the arts. There are also the personal benefits of increased self-esteem, improved memory, greater multi-tasking skills and better academic performance. Did you know that more than half of the world’s population is now bilingual? Bilingualism is certainly the way that the world is going. Research has also shown that improved decision-making skills, communication abilities and cultural sensitivity are also prevalent in bilingual people.

At MIS we are determined to build a platform for true bilingual learning, where we give equal value to both Japanese and English, and where we explore Japanese and world culture through language. Above all we acknowledge strength in diversity, and are truly proud to celebrate our diversity!
